I want God to speak to me!

From the desk of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D. I had a conversation with a fellow believer who was extremely distressed about something. He said, “I wish God would audibly speak to me like He does to others at my church!” He wanted to hear God speak to him. Is that how God speaks to us today? What does the Bible say? Scripture is the definitive way God speaks to us today and is why the author of Hebrews describes the Bible as living and active (Hebrews 4:12). The truths revealed in Scripture include who God is, how He operates, and who we are in relation to Him. They are every bit as active today as when the Bible was written. God speaks to people today through His Word! The Bible contains everything we need to know to be saved and live the Christian life (2 Peter 1:3). God speaks to His people every time we read the Word, hear it read, or preached (1 Thessalonians 2:13). The writer of Hebrews puts it this way: “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world” (Hebrews 1:1-2). God spoke through prophets in the past, and speaks now through Jesus! Verses 1 and 2 of Hebrews emphasize the fact that Jesus is the latest part of God’s continuous, consistent conversation with us. Where God had spoken through the prophets of the Old Testament, He now speaks through the person of Jesus. The term “Last days” signifies the time period between Jesus’ resurrection and His return to the earth for the Church. In other words, it speaks of the current time, right now! Speaking to believers “in His Son” means speaking to us through the Word of God (Bible). In John 1:1-2, 14, Jesus is called the Word because He is the physical manifestation of God the Father, and the personification of the written and spoken Word! Be encouraged to listen to God speaking to you!
