Paul declares, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” What does this mean? “For I am not ashamed”: In the ancient Roman world, honor and shame were significant social values. Preaching about a person who was judged and condemned as a criminal (Jesus) seemed foolish and weak to worldly society. Paul says he feels no public humiliation because his trust in Jesus is totally justified. “The power of God”: The gospel—the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection—is not just a philosophy. It is God’s infinite and absolute ability capable of transforming human hearts and securing eternal salvation. “To everyone who believes”: Salvation is not earned through human effort. It is received purely through personal trust and faith in Jesus. “First to the Jew, then to the Gentile”: The message of salvation came to the Jewish people first through the Old Testament promises, but it is equally available to the Gentiles (non-Jews) without distinction in value or access to God. Only the gospel of Jesus brings those who’ve been forgiven to final, everlasting joy. Nothing in the world can do this except the gospel. Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam — they do not have a Savior who can solve the problem of separation from a holy God through sin, and offer sinners hope by grace and not works. Only one message saves sinners and brings them safely into the presence of God: the gospel of Jesus Christ. It alone is the power of God unto salvation. Don’t leave this life without having the gospel of Christ.
