From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. New Testament (church) giving depends on the ability of the Christian. Every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom in the matter (James 1:5). Above all, offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. Concerning Christian giving, Paul teaches, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). God doesn't demand a fixed amount of money from us. That’s because He wants us to give from the heart. If people are coerced to give a certain percent of their income, that’s extortion and not cheerful giving! If we give freely and cheerfully the amount we are able and decided on, that's a gift. Tithes were given to the Levites and priests, but there are no Levites and priests in the church. Levites and priests were tied to the sacrificial system of the Old Covenant. The church is tied to the New Covenant. Now all believers are priests (1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 20:6), with Jesus as our High Priest (Hebrews 7). Be encouraged!
