What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God? (Part Two)

I was asked the question, “If the Bible says Jesus is the Son of God, how is it that Christians say that He is God?” Before Pontius Pilate, “The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He must die, because He claimed to be the Son of God.” (John 19:7). Why would His claiming to be the Son of God be considered blasphemy and be worthy of a death sentence? The Jewish leaders understood exactly what Jesus meant by the phrase “Son of God.” To be the Son of God is to be of the same nature as God. The Son of God is “of God.” The claim to be of the same nature as God—to in fact be God—was blasphemy to the Jewish leaders; therefore, they demanded Jesus’ death, in keeping with Leviticus 24:15. The Bible expresses this very clearly, “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3). The Son is the Radiance of God's Glory: Jesus perfectly reflects God's glory, making God's nature visible and understandable. He is the shining embodiment of all divine attributes. The Son is the Exact Representation of God's nature: Jesus's divine nature is identical to God's. He possesses the same divine attributes as God the Father. The Son upholds all things by His powerful word: Jesus actively sustains the universe through His command, showing His divine power, authority, and role as the Sustainer of all existence. His power is behind the existence of everything, holding it all together. Once again we see that the title Son of God simply reveals Jesus’ full divine nature as God. Be encouraged!
