We will be examining the text of 1 John 1:5-9. John tells the believer, “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). John begins with a simple but profound message about God’s nature and character that’s important to any fellowship between God and us. To have fellowship with God, it is essential to understand and acknowledge His holiness. Recognizing God's perfect purity and truth is fundamental to having fellowship with Him, as highlighted in 1 John 1:5. This understanding shapes our approach to God and our desire to live in alignment with His divine nature. Just as fellowship with any person is built on understanding their character, fellowship with God requires acknowledging His absolute holiness. John acknowledges God’s holiness with the words, “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” It means that God is morally pure, perfect, and the source of all truth and goodness. It signifies that God is free from any form of evil, sin, or imperfection. Calling us to live in the light is calling us to face the reality of our sinful nature and is calling us to live in the mercy, forgiveness, and unfailing love of God. Any misunderstanding on this point means to forfeit this fellowship as the next verse clearly states. Be encouraged to walk in the light as God is in the light.
