The Actual Impact of Gutting the Dept of Education

From the desk of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Bible Teacher & Expositor. After the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka ruling, which decided that racial segregation in public schools was not constitutional, white supremacists reacted by bombing and burning Black schools rather than integrate. Now, the current president plans to eliminate the entire Department of Education which, among a variety of other things, provides funding for under-resourced school districts disproportionately attended by Black children. We are witnessing a political and economic battle between those who would build an America which nurtures and protects all children and those who want to eliminate the contributions of some Americans, ban addressing our warped gross and wicked history of white supremacy, and revert to policies that previously resulted in racially segregated schools. Today, Black students disproportionately attend segregated and under-resourced classrooms. Gutting the Department of Education would worsen this trend by removing federal funding to the schools that need it most. Instead of a federal Department of Education, Trump is pushing a school voucher program agenda (sending public dollars to private schools) that prioritizes putting money in the pockets of families who already have plenty so that they can send their kids to private school and further erode the idea of school as a public good. Be informed! Keep looking to Jesus!
