From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor Th.D., Bible teacher & expositor. Amazingly enough, when we turn to the Bible, we see that God Himself wants to fellowship with those who’re in Christ. As a matter of fact, God has gone to incredible lengths to make it possible for us to fellowship with Him, and He has plans to do so for all eternity. Take a moment to chew on those words! Scripture makes it abundantly clear that God wants a close, personal relationship with His people. Apostle John says, “But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Fellowship means “a sharing between two parties.” In this case, it’s the light where God is. The result of walking in the light is that we have fellowship with one another. That’s to say, we have fellowship with God and He has fellowship with us! This speaks to the highest form of fellowship possible. But it’s also true that our ongoing fellowship with God is an active and two-way relationship. This fellowship (a sharing between two parties) is a two-way street. Through the Bible, God talks to us and reveals Himself to us and shows us His character and His deeds and what pleases Him. And we in return pursue intimacy with Him. Our fellowship is not something that God needs, but it is something that delights Him to receive. He has given us some specific ways to fellowship with Him, things like prayer, love, delight, and obedience to His Word. God’s role in the fellowship is that which He requires and accepts, and our role in the fellowship is to pursue intimacy with God, knowledge of God, and love for God through those means (prayer, delight, and obedience to His Word). Be encouraged in partaking of your fellowship with God!
