From the heart of Dr. Robert L.Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. What is Christian maturity? Jeopardy is a television game show where contestants are given general knowledge clues in the form of answers and they must identify the person, place, thing, or idea that the clue describes, phrasing each response in the form of a question. Our general knowledge clue is “Knowing and Doing!” The correct response is, “What is Christian maturity?” A key aspect of Christian maturity involves both knowing and doing. While knowledge of God’s Word and teachings is important, truly maturing in Christ requires actively living out that knowledge through obedience and good works. Yes, knowing and doing God's Word are essential for spiritual growth. This means both understanding the Bible and applying its teachings to your life. The concept of knowing and doing God’s Word is designed to shape a believer's life. Apostle James emphasizes that a profession of faith, without corresponding actions, is incomplete and ineffective. He teaches, “Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself” (James 2:17). The concept of spiritual maturity is often closely linked to the idea of Christlikeness, meaning becoming more like Jesus in character and behavior. Knowing God’s Word involves reading, studying, and reflecting on the Bible. It's about understanding God's character, His plan for humanity, and His specific teachings. Doing God's Word is about living according to what you've learned. It means putting your faith into practice by obeying God's commands, and living a life that reflects His love and teachings. Spiritual growth happens as you engage with God's Word and apply it in your life. This can involve becoming more like Jesus, developing a stronger faith, and growing in your understanding of God. Lastly, Christian maturity is not about achieving perfection, but rather about progressing and growing in our relationship with God and others, becoming more like Christ in our actions and attitudes. Mature Christians understand that they are not strong on their own and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide their thoughts, actions, and relationships. They’re learning to keep in step with the Holy Spirit. Christian maturity, in essence, is a state of being characterized by the outward display of the fruit of the Spirit, which are virtues like “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). These fruit are the result of God's Spirit working in a believer's life, indicating spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God. Be encouraged!
