From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. For every disciple of Jesus, these are seven simple yet effective words to pray. If you had to choose a verse in the Bible that’d be your life verse, what would it be? Like if you could sum up one verse, that which you wanted to describe your life, what would it be? If you can identify one verse that you want to mark your life, what would it be? After considerable thought, I’ve chosen John 3:30. We read, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). In talking about Jesus, John the Baptist is saying his purpose in this world is to decrease. That’s what he must do, and Jesus must increase. Meaning, John the Baptists purpose in this world was to exalt Jesus, not himself. Choosing to live by John 3:30 means emphasizing and prioritizing Jesus’ glory over your own, even if it means sacrificing personal recognition or desires. It’s a call to humility and a commitment to reflecting Jesus’ light rather than seeking the spotlight for oneself. Here’s a more detailed look at what it means to live by John 3:30. It means humility and surrender. Following Jesus demands humility and surrender. These concepts are intertwined, as humility involves acknowledging one’s limitations and dependence on God, while surrender entails trusting in God’s will and relinquishing control. John 3:30 reflects the humility of John the Baptist, who recognized Jesus' greater importance and willingly stepped aside to make way for Him. Living by this verse requires surrendering one's own ambitions, desires, and even perceived importance to allow Jesus to be the center of attention and the source of glory. Also, following Jesus means prioritizing God’s glory. Following Jesus fundamentally involves prioritizing God’s glory. This means living in a way that reflects and honors His character, teachings, and example, ultimately seeking to bring Him praise and recognition in all aspects of life. Actually, it’s about aligning one’s life with God’s will and purposes, embracing and recognizing Him as the ultimate source of worth and glory. While it may seem contrary to what seems logical or natural, choosing to decrease and allow Jesus to increase can actually lead to a deeper joy and fulfillment. When we surrender our lives to God, we find true freedom and a sense of purpose that comes from living in accordance with His will. Praise God forevermore! Be encouraged!
