Dealing with Mortality and the Brevity of Life (Part One)

Mortality and the brevity of life are themes found throughout the Bible. Scripture consistently reminds believers of the fleeting nature of life on earth, urging them to live with an eternal perspective. Here today, gone tomorrow speaks to the mortality and the brevity of life. The idea of mortality is introduced early in the Scriptures. After the fall of man, God declares, “By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). This pronouncement underscores the inevitability of death as a consequence of sin, marking the beginning of humanity's mortal journey. In the Bible, the inevitability of death means it is a certain and appointed end for all humans due to sin, but it is not the final end. It signifies that everyone will physically die once and then face judgment, which makes living a life of faith and righteousness a priority for eternal life. The Bible teaches that once a person dies, the opportunity to make choices about faith in Jesus is over. Hebrews 9:27 states, “Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment.” The biblical view is that while physical death is inevitable, it is not the end of one's existence. The soul continues to live, either in God's presence or in separation from Him. The brevity of life is a call to live intentionally and with purpose. The certainty of death is seen as a reminder to live with an eternal perspective, to focus on righteousness, and to be prepared for the judgment that follows. Be encouraged!
