From the heart of Dr. R. L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. David defeated Goliath not as a skilled soldier, but as one skilled in living by faith in God! Yes, the biblical story of David and Goliath emphasizes that David's victory was due to his strong faith in God, not his physical prowess. What can we learn from the account of David and Goliath? The story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is a factual account from biblical history that demonstrates living by faith in God. David, a young shepherd faced the 10-foot tall Philistine giant Goliath, who was a formidable warrior. Despite the vast difference in size and weaponry, David’s faith in God would grant him victory. David said to Goliath, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted” (1 Samuel 17:45). He famously defeated Goliath with a sling and a stone, demonstrating his faith and courage in God. Here's a more detailed explanation. Goliath was an arrogant, proud and boastful warrior who defiantly mocked the Israelite army and their God. The men of Saul’s army were afraid of Goliath, and there was no one to stand up to him. But David, on the other hand filled with faith in the power of God and a passion for God’s name which was being blasphemed by Goliath, slew Goliath with a stone and a sling. Then he cut off Goliath’s head with the giant’s own sword. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled from the Israelites, who had a great victory over them. The story highlights that faith in God can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, emphasizing that the battle belongs to the Lord. Until David came into the Israelite camp, there was no one who was willing to step out in faith and face the giant. However, David’s faith in God was so strong that he was willing to believe that the Lord would go with him and enable him to defeat Goliath (1 Samuel 17:36-37). People of faith have long faced giants in their lives, from Goliath and his brothers in Scripture to the fear, discouragement, loneliness, worry, guilt, temptation, anger, resentment, depression, doubt, pride, procrastination, failure, and jealousy that trouble, disturb, and plague us today! No matter what name we give them, we must have faith in God that these giants can fall, just as Goliath did! The illustration of David and Goliath is only one of many examples of the supernatural power of our Lord. He cares deeply for His children and wants only our best. When we are tested by how overwhelming and insurmountable life’s challenges can feel, there’s help in the battle! His name is Jesus! Through faith in the power of the Lord, we can stand up against any giant, trusting our Savior to win the victory! Be encouraged to live by faith in God!
