From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. For the Christian, the second item Scripture lists as “the fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22) is joy. Do you have joy in your life today? The evidence of the Spirit in the life of a Christian is fruit. The fruit is the product of the Holy Spirit’s cultivation of character in a heart. Our joy is a testimony of the work of Jesus in our lives and a witness to the unbelieving world around us. What is joy? In the Bible, joy is described as a lasting emotional state, a response of delight to God's presence, even in difficult circumstances. It's distinct from fleeting happiness and is associated with the presence of God, His strength, and deliverance. Joy is a fundamental aspect of the Christian life, stemming from a relationship with God and His promises. It's not a fleeting emotion, but a deep, abiding state of contentment, confidence, and hope that empowers believers to persevere through challenges. Joy, unlike happiness, is possible in any situation. That’s because joy comes from an awareness of God’s presence with you – and God is always with you. The psalmist says, “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). This verse suggests that joy is found in a relationship with and experiencing the presence of God. It implies that joy and fulfillment are not found in worldly possessions or experiences, but rather is connected to God’s character, promises, and His presence. Reflecting on who God is fills the heart with joy. This is why Paul says, “Rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Christians are called to rejoice in the Lord, even amidst challenges, because their joy is found in Him. Be encouraged!
