We read, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). What does this mean? It means that when a person finds their joy and contentment in God, their desires will naturally align with God's will, and He will grant those desires. This isn't a promise to get any selfish wish, but an assurance that as you grow closer to God, your heart's desires become transformed to be more like His. This verse is emphasizing a person’s desire for God! “Delight” involves finding joy and satisfaction in God's presence, character, and love. It is an invitation to a deeper fellowship with Him. The verse suggests that the “desires of your heart” refer to the longings that arise from finding your ultimate delight and fulfillment in the Lord, not just any desire. There’s an alignment of desires! When your delight is in God, your own desires begin to mirror His. He fulfills what you ask for in a way that is consistent with His character and plans, rather than giving you something harmful. As your heart's desires align with God's will, He is pleased to fulfill those very desires that He planted in you. He is happy to grant what you want when what you want is what He wants for you. The act of delighting in God is a process of transforming your heart, aligning your will with His. This leads to a deep sense of contentment and peace, which is the true fulfillment of desire. The context of this verse is key. The verse should not be taken out of its context. The preceding verses encourage trusting in the Lord and doing good, while the following verses continue the theme of committing your ways to Him. Be encouraged!
