The theme of this teaching is: Our experience of Jesus' sufficiency depends on our faithfulness to walk in Him on a continual basis! Many people who have prayed to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior are under the false impression that is all that's required of them! They fail to develop an on-going, growing dependency on Jesus in their lives! Because of this, they unwittingly allow other things access to their lives that compromise that dependency! And so, while the Lord Jesus Christ alone is truly sufficient to mold them into all that God wants them to be, they live with a frustrating sense of incompleteness and unfulfillment as if the Christian faith is something that, somehow, is not working for them! Nothing is further from the truth! Let me say that It's a wonderful thing to experience the sufficiency of Christ Jesus! In our passage, the words of apostle Paul instruct us what we're to do to experience the full blessing that is the sufficiency of Christ in our lives! Praise God forevermore! The first thing to understand and embrace is that Christ ALONE is sufficient to make us complete before God! Let's examine Paul's words. We read, "For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority" (vv. 9-10). Paul here stresses that all the fullness of Deity dwells in the Person of Jesus the Christ! The word Deity refers to the divine nature and attributes. All that we can have of the triune God is found in Jesus! In order for any of us to be saved, we must see God at one and the same time as the One judging our sin (the Father), the One who made payment of infinite worth for our sin (the Son), as well as the One who enabled and empowered the incarnate Son so that He lives and obeys the Father, going to Calvary as the Lamb of God (the Holy Spirit). Jesus is 100% God and 100% man in one Person! What is Paul teaching us? He's teaching that the eternal Son of God took human flesh upon Himself and walked among men in order that the fullness of the nature of God could dwell in someone who was also fully human! In this way, the eternal God could reach down to where we are, in all our lostness and helplessness! Jesus the Christ alone, then is sufficient to make us into everything that God wants us to be because all the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Him who is fully human, and thus fully accessible to us! When we walk with Christ, we walk with the triune God in all fullness in a Person who relates to our humanness! That's all the sufficiency anyone could ever need! Be encouraged!
