Understanding And Embracing The Wonder Of The Father: Who Is God!

Let's examine the Father's unique role within the Godhead. The question becomes, "What is the nature of the role of the Father in relation to His Son and to the Holy Spirit?" The Word of God is very clear in teaching that there is one and only one God (Deut. 6:4). The Word of God is very clear that the one God exists eternally and is fully expressed in three Persons. The three Persons are identified as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! They are members of what the Bible calls, "The Godhead," (the fullness of the divine nature and attributes), each being eternally God, and each being fully God! They are not three gods but three Persons of the one Godhead (Colossians 2:9). Each member of the Godhead is equal in nature as each possesses fully the identically same eternal divine nature. Each member is also an eternal and distinct personal expression of the one undivided divine nature. The Father, then, being a member of the Godhead, is fully and completely God. What is the Father's unique role within the Godhead? We need to examine a passage found in Psalm 2:1-9. We will come to see that the Father is, in His position and authority, supreme among the Persons of the Godhead. Psalm 2:2 says, "The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying." Now, for all who might be wondering how God responds to the nations that are taking their stand against Him, I've got news for you! Our God is Sovereign and is seated on the throne! He has not resigned! He has not been impeached! He has not been voted out! There are no term limits to His rule! God is not in heaven thinking, "Oh, boy, all these people down there are against Me. The world is out of control! What in the world will I do?" God's response is one that you'd expect from One who's in control. The Psalmist says, "He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them" (verse 4). He does this because He knows that their time of reckoning is coming (verses 5-6). We see that God asserts His Sovereign authority over the kings and rulers of the earth, as well as over the King that He sets over the nations! The point is obvious. The Father who is over the nations, is also above the King that He sets over the nations! That's supremacy! Now, who do you think this King is whom the Father will set over the raging nations? The Psalmist answers the question for us in verses 6-9! This King is none other than God the Son! In other words, God the Father subjects the nations to His authority by sending God the Son to come on the scene as the incarnate Son and King to rule over the world! Praise God forevermore! Yes, the Father is supreme in the Godhead, as is clearly stated in Psalm 2. Your move. Be encouraged!
