To stand strong through persecution, we must imitate other Christ followers who've stood strong! Verse 14 of our passage says, "For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews..." These words remind us that many times when we go through suffering, whether it's sickness, emotional, financial, or persecution for believing in Christ, we may have the tendency to think that others don't suffer the same problems. I'm reminded of Elijah when he was under persecution, he complained to the Lord that he was the only one left who believed and followed Him (1 Kings 19:10). Brothers and sisters, it's because of this tendency, that apostle Peter encouraged and strengthened persecuted Christ followers. He said, "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you" (1 Peter 4:12). To stand strong through persecution, it's important to understand and embrace that we're not alone! According to the Scriptures, the same experiences of suffering are happening to Christ followers in this world. Peter reminds us that God is sovereign over our persecutions, that He's in charge! In 1 Peter 5:10, just a few verses later, Peter said, "After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you." Praise God forevermore!! The writer of Hebrews reminds us, "Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith" (Hebrews 13:7). There it is! To stand strong through persecution, we must imitate those Christ followers who stood strong! This is the pattern to follow. Your move. Be encouraged!
