From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor., Bible Teacher & Expositor. Let’s examine what the Bible says about spiritual life. Understanding the definition of life from a spiritual perspective is essential. We read, “When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:13-14). Paul said, God made us “alive together with Him.” This speaks of spiritual life. Paul emphasizes that before we were believers, we were spiritually “dead” in our sins. But through faith in Christ, God breathed new life into us, making us spiritually alive. God’s forgiveness serves as one of the most powerful aspects of being a believer in Christ. A believer receives new life (spiritual) for eternity, while also experiencing a new quality of life (spiritual) today. In speaking of this new quality of life (spiritual) Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). True abundant life (spiritual life) consists of an abundance of love, joy, peace, and the rest of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), not an abundance of “stuff.” It consists of communion with God, for God designed humans uniquely for spiritual life. Paul admonishes us, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:2-3). This is a spiritual reality! Paul is talking about spiritual life, that is, communion with God. This implies a deep, secure connection with Christ and God. God designed humans uniquely for spiritual life. We were created to have fellowship with Him. Paul teaches, “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ, by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5). Being made “alive together with Christ” speaks of spiritual life. This new life allows believers to live according to God's will and experience His presence. Be encouraged!
