Is it possible to be too heavenly minded that you are of no worldly good?

From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. A person told me, “You can’t be too heavenly minded that you’re of no earthly good.” The criticism is a catchy turn of phrase, but is it warranted? Absolutely not! The accusation that some Christians are too heavenly focused and therefore not paying enough attention to worldly matters is based on a false premise, namely, that love of God makes one less capable or less concerned with the practical affairs of the world. Being “heavenly minded” does not result in isolating oneself from the world, ignoring contemporary issues, or declining to be involved. Just the opposite: being heavenly minded results in attempting to please and glorify God, who has given us work to do in this world. When speaking about salvation, Ephesians 2:8–9 is an extremely popular passage of Scripture. But, since those two verses are so often quoted, many miss out on verse 10 when seeking to understand God's salvation by grace through faith. It says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). This important statement offers tremendous insight into what God desires after salvation. God says, we are crafted, with skill and a purpose, by God, for His purposes. Specifically, that purpose is “for good works” in this world. Heavenly minded Christians have always tackled issues like poverty and economic inequality, social injustice, racial injustice, and care for the marginalized. Some of the most impactful people in history have been Christians whose faith moved them to action. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next! It is the earthly minded who accomplish nothing of eternal value. Being heavenly minded is the ONLY way you will ever be any earthly good. I can say, without exaggeration, that I have never met such a person in my many years of being a Christian. Not even once. And I never will. The reason I’ll never meet a Christian too heavenly minded as to be of no earthly good is heavenly minded people are always those who do the most earthly good! See Colossians 3:1-3. Be encouraged!
