Christian Nationalism is an Oxymoron

An oxymoron is a contradiction in terms. I am a Biblical apologist. As such, my aim is challenging false ideas, and dismantling arguments that contradict Christian truth. Scripture reminds us, “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints” (Jude 1:3). To earnestly contend for the faith means to actively and strenuously defend the established truth of the Christian gospel against false teachings and ungodly influences, while also living out that faith in daily life and helping others to do the same. As a Christian apologist, it is time for me to defend Christianity and the Christian faith from “Christian nationalists.” Of all the terms I have heard associated with the Christian faith, the term “Christian nationalism” that is being trumpeted from pulpits and political platforms across America is most concerning. Christian nationalism is, a political ideology that seeks to merge Christian and American identities, distorting both the Christian faith and America’s constitutional democracy. When talking to the politician known as Pontious Pilate, Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm” (John 18:36). Jesus’ words are an argument against Christian nationalism! There can be no mixing of the Kingdom of God and those of the world. Jesus is emphasizing that although His followers are in the world, they are not of it, belonging instead to a divine kingdom characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Christian nationalism is man-made and of this world. Christian nationalism is not in the Bible! It’s not Christianity. It is a form of misplaced devotion, causing many believers to think and behave in ways considered to be unbiblical. Be encouraged!
