From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. For the Christian, the ninth item Scripture lists as “the fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:23) is self-control. The fruit of the Spirit is the change in our character that comes about because of the Holy Spirit’s work in us. What is self-control? Self-control as a fruit of the Spirit refers to the ability to govern one's emotions, desires, and impulses in a way that is pleasing to God. It's about having dominion over one's actions and reactions, rather than being controlled by them. Self-control is not only the ability to restrain impulsive actions, but a broader concept encompassing the ability to exercise restraint and moderation in all aspects of life. It's about controlling our desires and thoughts, not just limiting ourselves to what's forbidden, but also actively choosing to do what is good. In the Bible, self-control is considered a vital virtue, and essential for living a life pleasing to God. Self-control helps individuals resist temptation, avoid sin, and live a life that reflects God's character. The fruit of the Spirit starts in love and ends in self-control! This means that love is the foundation of the Christian life, and self-control is the ultimate manifestation of that love, allowing the other virtues to mature and bear fruit. Self-control, in this context, is not just about restraining negative impulses, but about being guided by the Spirit to act in a way that reflects the love of God and the character of Jesus. The fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, is a list of nine character qualities that are produced in the lives of believers who walk in the Holy Spirit. These qualities are seen as a manifestation of God's character and a reflection of the Holy Spirit's work in believers, distinguishing them from those who live according to the flesh. Be encouraged to keep in step with the Holy Spirit!
