From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. For the Christian, the sixth item Scripture lists as “the fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22) is goodness. What is goodness? Goodness isn't just about doing what's right. It's about actively choosing to be kind, generous, and understanding towards others, even when we don't have to. In reflecting on the nature of goodness, it's enlightening to consider its biblical significance. Paul reminds us of the transformative power of goodness, with these words, “For you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10). Paul is urging us to live as children of light and to discern what pleases God. It has been said that goodness “is easier to recognize than to define.” At its essence, goodness mirrors the very nature of God Himself. Throughout Scripture, we encounter countless manifestations of God's goodness towards humanity—provision, forgiveness, and grace abound. As recipients of this divine goodness, we are called to reflect it in our lives. Living a life characterized by goodness demands more than mere refraining from wrongdoing. It necessitates intentional acts of kindness, compassion, and service towards others. It entails embodying the love of Christ in our interactions and endeavors. In a world marked by strife and selfishness, the call to goodness serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the darkness with acts of kindness and compassion. As followers of Christ, we bear the responsibility of reflecting God's goodness to a world in desperate need. However, embodying goodness is no easy task. It requires humility, selflessness, and a willingness to prioritize the needs of others. Yet, as we keep in step with the Holy Spirit, we can experience the transformative power of goodness in our lives and the lives of those around us. Be encouraged!
