Our passage says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overpower it" (John 1:1-5). Have you ever seen the movie, Ben-Hur? In the movie, Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur is framed for a crime, imprisoned by the Romans as a galley slave where he'd be forced to row. He was exhausted and thirsty and had fallen to the ground from being tired. He cried out, "God, help me!" At that moment Jesus (the movie didn't show His face, but only His back) reached down to give Ben-Hur a drink. When the Roman soldier in charge saw this, he yelled at Jesus to leave Ben-Hur alone and raised his whip! Jesus turned and looked at this soldier, who stood there stunned and immobilized in awe as he gazed into Jesus' face! He lowered his whip and turned away! This was the effect on that soldier after having come face to face with Jesus! In our passage, by bringing the reader face to face with the glory and majesty of Jesus, apostle John wants us to stand in awe of Jesus as well! John's point in his stunning description of Jesus is to show us that He's the eternal Word, the Creator of all things, and that Jesus is the revealer of the life and Light of God Almighty to this world that's in darkness! Have you ever been stunned and amazed like the soldier in the Ben-Hur movie because God opened your eyes to see Jesus as He really is? Because Jesus is the eternal God, we should submit everything we are and have to Him. John is showing us that in order to know God, we must look at Jesus, the eternal Word of God! Have you done this? If so, praise God forevermore! If not, why not? Calling out to Jesus for salvation is the absolute best decision you'll ever make! Your move. Be encouraged!
