Are Personal Words such as "God said to me" biblical? Part Two

Let's examine a passage of Scripture that teaches that making decisions based on so called "personal words from God" is not the plan of God for Christ followers. Apostle James says, "Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil" (James 4:13-16). This passage gives important proof that the "personal words from God" approach is not sound doctrine. If the Scriptural pattern was for Christ followers to get special revelation from God that directs their future plans, then James would say, "You ought to have asked, "Lord tell us Your will about whether to go and do this business." But, James does not say that! James said you ought to say, "If the Lord wills." This means that they should've not boasted about the future when they didn't know what it is! In other words, to claim to know what one does not know, "personal words from God," James calls arrogant boasting which God condemns! These people were free to choose to go "to such and such a city" and do business, but they were not free to claim to know the future outcome from "personal words from God." According to James, we're to say "If the Lord wills" than claiming the Lord's endorsement of our plans based on supposed "personal words from God," or words like, "God said this to me." As Christ followers, we're safe to make plans based on the wisdom of God as well as plans that fit within our Christ liberty. This encourages us that God will use even our decisions to bring about His will for our lives. Only inerrant, authoritative, special revelation is for governing our lives. The only "words from God" that fit with that standard are those found in the Bible! Be encouraged!
