Scripture teaches us, “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself” (Philippians 3:20-21). The amazing passage speaks to us about the rapture as well as the resurrected, glorified body that comes to those united to Jesus. The phrase, “eagerly waiting” means to be waiting with great excitement, enthusiasm, and strong anticipation for something or someone to happen or arrive. It describes the way one waits, showing an intense desire for something enjoyable to occur! The emotional appeal of this passage indicates that this desire was so intense that it was the primary focus of their attention. We’re taught to eagerly wait for Jesus to come for us (rapture) and everything that surrounds His coming (the resurrected, glorified body). This event is not only an enthusiastic desire but a patient waiting, for though, we don’t know the time of Jesus’ return, it’s something we’re fully persuaded could happen at any moment. How do we know? Paul teaches us, “Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is at hand” (Philippians 4:5). The phrase “At hand” signifies an imminent presence or situation. Understanding that Christ can come at any moment (imminent) is a source of encouragement for those who are saved (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18), not a discouragement or source of fear. Be encouraged!
