From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. Authentic Christianity refers to a genuine and lived-out faith in Jesus, characterized by a deep relationship with God, adherence to biblical teachings, and a transformed life that reflects Christ's love and example, rather than merely adhering to rules or rituals. It involves actively pursuing a relationship with God, striving for holiness, and sharing the Gospel with others, while also acknowledging one's sinfulness and relying on God's grace. The wisdom of right relationships is a huge part of authentic Christianity. Let’s examine the significance of Paul’s words to the believers at Corinth. He says, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good character’” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Paul is stressing and emphasizing the importance of discerning relationships and avoiding negative influences. The verse is a call to be cautious and discerning about the company one keeps, as ungodly influences can negatively impact one's spiritual life and character. It highlights the significance of surrounding oneself with wise and godly individuals who will encourage spiritual growth and align with God's will, rather than those who might undermine and lead astray. Related to the broader context of 1 Corinthians 15, which emphasizes the resurrection of Jesus and the hope of believers, this verse is seen as a warning against losing conviction due to negative influences. In other words, stop listening to unsound and bad Bible teaching for it leads to bad behavior. It was bad enough that these associations had affected their thinking on an important matter like the resurrection, but this bad company could corrupt far more. Actually, this speaks to the vital need described in Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” By keeping evil company, the Corinthian believers were being shaped into the mold of this world, and they needed to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Christians must let the sound teaching of God’s Word shape their thinking, not the evil company of this world. Throughout much of First Corinthians, Paul deals with the moral problems of the believers: envy, divisions, pride, immorality, greed, irreverence, and selfishness. How much of this came in because they were deceived by keeping bad company? Be encouraged in using God’s wisdom in forming relationships.
