From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. We open this teaching with an honest, vulnerable, and unfiltered email from a hurting man. He’s sad and discouraged over the brokenness of the world. This is his story, sent to me as an anonymous email. “Dear Dr. Taylor, to be totally truthful and honest with you, I struggle to believe the Lord is completely ruling His world today. It’s impossible to believe simply because of the state of the world today.” For me, the most serious thing this dear man says is “It is impossible to believe.” I pray that God might perhaps use something I say to make it possible again. When we say God is sovereign, we mean He is powerful and authoritative to the extent of being able to override all other powers and authorities. Ultimately, embracing God's sovereignty in the face of injustice often comes down to faith. While the existence of suffering and evil can be challenging to reconcile with a belief in a good and all-powerful God, many Christians find comfort and hope in understanding that God is ultimately in control and is working all things for good for those who love Him (see Romans 8:28). I would say that the physical horrors and injustice in the world can make sense to us and have meaning and eventual righteous resolution only if we come to embrace the biblical reality that sin against an infinitely wise, just, and good God is the source of a world filled with injustice. That’s the heart of the matter, and it is very difficult for people apart from the Holy Spirit’s influence and work to embrace. Finally, the thing that keeps me believing is that God sent His Son into this world to suffer the torture of a Roman crucifixion is an injustice far greater than any other. So I don’t claim that such faith is simple or easy. It is a gift, and I am simply bearing witness to how it is that I am still believing and embracing God’s sovereign control in a world filled with injustice. Be encouraged!
