"Developing a Contentment that Never, Ever Disappoints" (Hebrews 13:5-6)

Our passage says, "Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you," so that we confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?" Among many Christ followers, biblical contentment is not common! But, the Lord desires that we develop a contentment that never, ever disappoints. Let's examine our passage to see what it reveals. We're shown that for Christ followers, the ultimate source of contentment has to be God because He never, ever disappoints! Having said that, I'm reminded of the words from Asaph, who said, "Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever" (Psalm 73:25-26)! What a powerful passage of Scripture! The psalmist is saying that the source of his satisfaction is God! He said, "And besides (with) You, I desire nothing on earth!" Concerning God being our portion, Charles Simeon says, "God is an ever-present portion. We may possess many things, yet not have them with us in the time of necessity. But God is every where present to afford us help. God is an all-sufficient portion. In the possession of earthly blessings, His presence will greatly enhance our enjoyment of them. In the absence of all temporal comforts, with Him we can feel no want. God is an eternal portion. However long we retain earthly things, we must part with them at last. But, if God is ours, we shall possess Him forever. We are not left without many rich communications from Him now. But, it's not till after death, that we shall have the full enjoyment of Him. Now, we taste of the streams; then, we shall drink at the fountain-head. Now, our capacity to enjoy Him is small; then, all our faculties will be wonderfully enlarged. Now, our delight of Him is transient; then, without intermission or end." Ponder these words and allow them to take root in your heart! As you do, God will begin to make the adjustments needed for you to not only talk about contentment, but actually live through it! Praise God forevermore! Your move. Be encouraged!
