What does Paul mean by “putting on” the full armor of God? (Part Three)

We read, “And having strapped on your feet with the readiness of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:15-16). The “gospel of peace” relates to Jesus as He is the embodiment of peace. In other words, Jesus is not just a source of peace, but is peace itself, reconciling humanity with God through His life, death, and resurrection. The “gospel of peace” is the Bible’s message of reconciliation and harmony between God and humanity through Jesus’ death and resurrection. It is the “good news” that, by trusting in Jesus, individuals can be forgiven of their sins and experience a restored relationship with God. Because the schemes of the devil include his hatred of the gospel message, we’re to be prepared to stand against his opposition with firm footing and readiness to spread this message of peace to others. God expects us to take the gospel of peace to others (1 Peter 3:15). Next, Paul mentions the “shield of faith.” This relates to Jesus because He’s the ultimate, tangible representation of what faith looks like in a person. His life and actions demonstrated faith by living out God's will, rather than just professing that belief. Regularly living by faith to extinguish the “flaming arrows” (temptations and wicked thoughts) of the evil one, is similar to how a Roman soldier's shield would be dipped in water to put out flames. By faith, believers are called to fully surrender to God and actively resist the devil's temptations and lies. By submitting to God's will and trusting in His strength, a person can overcome evil, and the devil will have no power over them. Resistance to the flaming arrows of the evil one is accomplished through faith and the power of the Holy Spirit. (See James 4:7). Be encouraged!
