What does it mean to be spiritually lost?

From the desk of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D. A particular line in the well-known hymn “Amazing Grace” says, “I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” We may have sung it a thousand times without realizing what lost means. In the Bible, the term is used in reference to people who have not yet found eternal life in Christ. Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Those who are spiritually lost are separated from God and unable to find their way back to Him. To be lost is to have wandered away and to be helpless to find the way back. Someone must find you. Salvation came because Jesus had come to seek and to save this lost sinner named Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-6). This is the most foundational reason for Zacchaeus’ salvation: not that he was seeking Jesus, but that Jesus was personally seeking him. Wonderfully, this is the heart of Jesus toward all who are lost! These words graphically demonstrates God’s tender care and concern for every person! Jesus is still seeking to save that which was lost. Have you responded to Him? Be encouraged!
