From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. From God’s perspective, the church is to be an extension of the family! The reconciliation comes through beholding, understanding, and embracing the awesome wonder of the Godhead (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) in relational community (as they relate to one another). I’ll begin by saying, both authority and submission are good, for both are expressive of the triune God Himself. In the Godhead, the various roles played by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit demonstrates the beauty and unity of harmony which serves as a model for believers to emulate in our relationships (family and church)! The reason we find it difficult to think godly about authority and submission is one very simple reason: because of our sinful nature, we want to be in charge of our own lives. However, God loves, exercises, and embraces rightful authority-submission relationships. The failure to embrace godly submission and authority leads to disorder in families and the church! As believers, we must learn to embrace what’s eternally true in God, which means, among other things, embracing biblical authority and biblical submission. If our homes and our churches are truly to be countercultural, we must show a whole-hearted, healthy respect for biblical authority and biblical submission. Scripture teaches that Jesus although equal to the Father submitted to the Father. Jesus frequently emphasized His obedience to His Father’s will (John 6:38, 5:30, 6:40), highlighting His mission to fulfill the Father’s purpose, not His own. The Holy Spirit submits to the Father and Jesus by glorifying Him, taking what is Jesus’ and declaring it, and by working to make Jesus known and understood, rather than seeking self-glory (John 16:14). Be encouraged!
