Paul teaches, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:1). This is the second group of humanity. A carnal believer is a person who has faith in Christ but still lives and thinks according to learned worldly habits rather than being led by the Holy Spirit. As a babe in Christ, this person is spiritually immature and act like infants in their daily actions and understanding. Immature believers struggle to judge situations through a spiritual lens. Carnality is a state of arrested spiritual development because Paul says, “For you are still carnal” (1 Corinthians 3:3). While being a babe in Christ is a natural starting point for new believers, the biblical expectation is that individuals will grow, mature, and develop deeper self-control, love, and biblical knowledge over time.
