Making Sense of Matthew 5:39

Jesus taught, “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also” (Matthew 5:39). In the ancient world, a slap to the right cheek was not a physical attempt to injure, but a severe cultural insult intended to degrade or demean the recipient. By offering the other cheek, the recipient is refusing to retaliate, while at the same time forcing the aggressor to treat them as an equal rather than an inferior. It is a stand of dignity and defiance against personal humiliation. This isn’t a prohibition against self-defense or the pursuit of legal justice. Ultimately, Jesus is teaching His followers to reflect God’s character by offering mercy instead of seeking to "get even."
