From the heart of Dr. R. L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Teacher & Expositor. One of the reasons life is chaotic and devalued in today’s culture is that many people value their own happiness and fulfillment over God’s purposes for their lives. The phrase “life was not meant to be lived apart from God” means that human existence finds its ultimate purpose, meaning, and fulfillment through a relationship with God. It means that nothing in the universe or in the life of an individual is without an intended outcome established by God. Remember, that God is the ultimate source and determiner of purpose for everything in existence. Apostle Paul teaches us, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16-17). For humans it implies that without God, life will feel empty, meaningless, and lacking in contentment and satisfaction. This biblical perspective emphasizes God as the source of meaning, purpose, and inherent value in life. The purpose of our lives is far greater than personal fulfillment, peace of mind, or even happiness. It’s far greater than our families, our careers, or even our wildest dreams and ambitions. If we want to know why we were placed on this planet, we must begin with God. Each of us was born by His purpose and for His purpose. Be encouraged!
