From the desk of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D. We read, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). John Bunyan was a prolific Christian author, writer and preacher. He authored a book entitled, “The Holy War” an allegorical novel which depicts fictional people and events to illustrate and explain the Christian’s spiritual journey. In this particular novel, the author pictures the heart of the Christian as a city called Mansoul. In the allegory, the means of entry and access to Mansoul is obtained through five gates: Eye-Gate (one of the most significant gates), Ear-Gate (where the enemy of Mansoul, Diabolus (the devil), first attacks the city, Mouth-Gate, Feel-Gate (which is weakly guarded), and Nose-Gate. However, these entry points “could never be opened nor forced, but by the will and leave of those within” (Ch. 1, p. 62). Mr. Godly-Fear is in charge of the gatekeeping. All of Diabolus’s attacks on Mansoul are repelled as long as Godly-Fear is the gatekeeper (chapter 15, p. 285). Godly fear (reverence of God) is considered to be practical, reasonable and instinctual. It comes from the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit that is described as a sense of reverential awe and a reminder of our place in creation. By reverence, I mean a strong feeling of respect and admiration, a deep and joyful awareness of and honor for Jesus that’s brought by the Holy Spirit! Godly fear is different from worldly fear, which can cause anxiety and alarm. Instead, godly fear is a source of confidence, assurance, and peace. Here are some characteristics of godly fear: Reasonable: Godly fear recognizes the danger of not guarding the heart and works to avoid it. Instinctual: Godly fear is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Practical: Godly fear motivates us to take action. Godly fear can provide a sense of assurance, peace and confidence. Let’s watch over our hearts! Let’s not be caught slipping or not paying attention to Godly fear! Be encouraged!
