Experiencing the abundant life (Part One)

For many, the “abundant life” is the belief that Jesus’ promise in John 10:10 guarantees believers a life of escaping the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle (prosperity), perfect health, and total victory over poverty and sickness right now on Earth. It is accessed through speaking faith-filled words. Is that your experience? That’s not what Jesus teaches! Jesus unpacks what He means by the “abundant life” a few verses after John 10:10 saying: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). This verse outlines the foundational marks of “having life abundantly.” They are: receptivity to God’s truth (hearing), an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus (being known), and active obedience (following). Biblically, the abundant life points to believers recognizing the truth of the Gospel. It points to Jesus assuring His followers that He intimately knows and understands their struggles, fears, and needs. It points to belief translating into the action of following. Are you living the abundant life? Be encouraged!
