From the heart of Dr. R. L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Expositor & Teacher. The first of these Christian certainties is “We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him” (1 John 5:18). In our passage, John says, “and the evil one does not touch him.” In other words, not only can the evil one (Satan) not defeat the “one who is born of God” (new man) read 2 Corinthians 5:17), but he can’t even touch him! It’s totally reassuring to remember that, whatever our failures may be, they don’t really touch the core of what we are (new creations) as children of God. At the moment that we’re most humbled by our sinful failures, and when we confess them (read 1 John 1:7-9), it’s extremely helpful to be certain and confident that those failures have not changed or altered what we are as being “born of God!” So, this is the situation. After we’ve sinned, deeply though we may and should regret it, we should arise from our confession to God KNOWING that we’re the same justified persons we were before we failed! Be encouraged! Praise Jesus forevermore!!
