From the heart of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D., Bible Expositor & Teacher. The third of these Christian certainties is, “And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). The third thing “we know” is that by virtue of the coming of Jesus, we have been granted spiritual comprehension (an understanding) that makes it possible for us to know the true God! This understanding is acquired through fellowship with God and is verified by obedience to the commands of God (see 1 John 2:3-4). John affirms that the believer’s ability to attain such knowledge is made possible by the truth that “the Son of God has come.” Please take note the word, true occurs three times! The word, true is actually “reality.” Here is reality. Here is the great rock upon which everything rests. The Christian’s faith does not rest upon men’s guesses, not upon those great explorations of human knowledge called philosophy; not on witty or clever ideas, or on untested theories. The reality of our faith in God rests solely and solidly upon the great events of God’s actions in history. It rests on facts. Be encouraged!
