According to the Bible, are there any true Atheists?

From the desk of Dr. Robert L. Taylor, Th.D. Scripture tells us that the answer, in a word, is No! Atheism is the view that God does not exist. We read, “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1). The Hebrew word for “fool” describes a person who is a deliberate rebel against God, and who thinks and acts accordingly. It speaks of deliberate immorality in thought, word and deed, not lack of intellectual capacity. As we shall see, this is an important distinction. The Apostle Paul teaches that every human being knows God! He develops this thought in Romans 1:18-23. Yes, God has revealed Himself to every person through creation, and therefore everyone knows God. The Bible says that God has made it clear that He exists through His creation, and that people should be able to see His divine nature and eternal power in the world around them. Romans 1:20 says that God has given people enough knowledge about Himself that they should seek Him out, and that those who do will always find Him. The Bible also says that people have no excuse for not knowing God, and that those who choose to ignore God are willfully suppressing the truth. Let’s examine some things about man’s knowledge of God! The subject of the passage in its context (1:18-3:26) is all of mankind - no exceptions! The Bible teaches that every man knows God (1:21). The Greek word “knew” speaks of “intelligent comprehension.” In other words, the Biblical fool is neither unintelligent nor does he lack the evidence of God’s existence to intelligently evaluate! Our passage tells us, fallen mankind has made the conscious choice not to glorify God or honor Him as God (verse 21). Brothers and sisters, it’s this conscious choice that causes some to go so far as to say, “There is no God.” They suppress the truth of God's existence and attributes (verse 18). They exhibit worthless reasoning, and darkened thinking (verse 21). They openly insist, in their God-denial, that they are the ones who are wise, when in fact they are fools (verse 22). If you have family, friends or acquaintances who profess to be atheists, the best thing you can do is to recognize the spiritual bondage the Bible says they are in, and pray for them!  Pray that God the Holy Spirit would bring light to their darkened hearts. Pray for opportunities to bear witness to them about that light, using the Bible as your sole authority. And trust God for the results. Your move! Be encouraged!
