A Biblical and Genetic Perspective

As a former biochemistry/premed major at Temple University, the professor in the genetics class taught us that human skin color is primarily determined by genetics, controlled by multiple genes that regulate the production and distribution of a pigment called melanin. Humans around the world are diverse with different skin shades. Yet, the Bible teaches that we are all descendants of Adam (Acts 17:26). Because genes code for different pigments (melanin), a brown genetic makeup contains the full range of genetic information needed to produce offspring with every shade of skin color over generations. This raises an interesting question: Was Adam a person of color?
