In part one, we discovered that when we have fellowship with the risen and glorified "God/Man", Christ Jesus, we have fellowship with the triune God in all fullness in a Person who relates to our humanness! We saw that Jesus Christ alone is sufficient to make Christ followers everything that God wants us to be! That my friends is sufficiency! In this lesson, Paul not only affirms the fact that Jesus is God, but also His supremacy. He says that Christ is, "the head over all rule and authority" (v. 10). In other words, there's no authority or power that's greater or higher than His! Earlier, Paul told us, "For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:16-17). As we examine this passage, please keep in mind, we're talking about experiencing the sufficiency of Christ! Sufficiency is defined as, "To meet one's needs." These passages show that Christ alone is more than sufficient for the Christ follower! Jesus Christ is sufficient to make us complete because having died for us at Calvary, He has totally taken away anything that any power or authority can ever hold against us! There's no higher court that can ever be appealed to in order to overturn our justification in Him, and there exists no power that can ever impede the sufficiency of His amazing grace to save us! Why is this so? Paul tells us that Jesus is supreme and ruler over the universe because He created it and sustains it! John reminds us, "All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being" (John 1:3). Paul tells us, "For by Him all things were created!" (Colossians 1:16). Paul is telling us that Jesus Christ has absolute priority over all creation because He existed before it and He created it! Not only did Jesus create all that exists, He also sustains it! Paul says, "and in Him all things hold together" (v. 17). Jesus keeps the entire universe from disintegrating! The writer of Hebrews reminds us that the universe and all that's in it is constantly sustained by Jesus' powerfully effective Word! We read, "And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power" (Hebrews 1:3). What holds the universe together is not some theory or virtue, but a Person, the risen Christ! Without Him, electrons wouldn't continue to circle nuclei, gravity would cease to work, the planets wouldn't stay in their orbits! Apart from Him there's no existence, no life! Are you getting the point that there's none more sufficient for you than Jesus Christ? Your move. Be encouraged!
