Our text says, "God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world." As Christ followers, how can we know the will of God in such a way that we can consciously share in it? The first thing we must declare is that God can speak to us in many different ways. The next thing is this: today God speaks to us by His Son. The writer of Hebrews is very careful to distinguish between how God used to speak and how God speaks today. He says "in these last days has spoken to us in His Son." Keep in mind that the book of Hebrews is a letter that continually displays how Christ is superior to anything in the Old Testament. In other words, the revelation in Christ is far better than anything that came before it! God used to speak in these ways, but today, even better, He speaks through His Son! How does God speak by Jesus? God speaks to us by His Son, through the Bible. The last thing is this: that apart from this, speaking by His Son, through the Bible, God does not promise that He'll speak in any other way! We can't have faith in what God has not promised! In other words, we can have faith and expect that God will speak to us in the Bible only! God does not promise to speak in the ways He's spoken before! God does not promise to speak in new ways! The Bible never tells us to expect an audible voice, a certain feeling, an inward knowing, or a still small voice! The Bible always, only, ever points to itself! If you desire to consciously participate in God's will for your life, you need to look no further than your Bible! Do you want to know how to serve God? Do you want to know how to please God? Do you desire to know what God wants from you? Do you want to know what God wants you to know about Himself? Do you wish to make sound, wise, and God-honoring decisions? You must look to your Bible! It's the one and only way that God has promised to speak and guide you. Your move. Be encouraged!
