We find in this Psalm that the Word of God is authoritative, dependable, and full of power. We're shown how God's Word controlled the psalmist's life; before dawn (v 147), daily (v 97), seven times daily (v 164), nightly (v 55, 148) and at midnight (v 62). The words used as synonyms for the Word of God in Psalm 119 carry the idea of authority, reliability, and power. Let's examine these: (1) Law (v 1; the main synonym, used 25x in this psalm) has the subtle difference of "teaching." It can be used in reference to a single command, to the first 5 books of Moses, or even to the entire Word of God (John 15:25; 1 Cor 14:21). The law shows God's will for how the Christ follower is to live. Seeing that it originates with God, the law is for obedience. It's something to be practiced! (2) Testimonies (v 2; used 10x in the psalm). It comes from a root that means "to bear witness." In other words, it points to the reliability of the Word of God as a witness of the character, ability and nature of God. This is an area in which we all need to grow! (3) Ways (v 3; used 7x of God's ways in Psalm 119) is in reference to how God acts as opposed to how we act (119:5, 26, 29, 59, 168). (4) Precepts (v 4; used 21x in this psalm) comes from the word meaning to "oversee or pay close attention to something." In other words, it directs our attention to the instructions of God, as of one who cares about detail. (5) Statutes (v 5; 22x in the psalm) originates from a word meaning "to engrave in stone." In other words, they speak of the permanence of binding force of the Word of God. (6) Commandments (v 6; 22x in this psalm) refers to "the straight authority of what is being said." It's the idea behind issuing orders. (7) Ordinances (23x in this psalm) has the idea of justice that's rooted in God's character. (8) Word (v 9; 23x in psalm 119) stressing the fact that God has spoken. What is the sum effect of all these terms? It's that the Word of God speaks with God's authority. The Word of God is authoritative, reliable, and powerful! What the Word of God says, God says! Let's make it our priority! For the Christ follower, it doesn't get any better than this! Your move. Be encouraged!
